The last parliament was overshadowed by revelations of politicians greed and corruption. The activities of Conservative MP Derek Conway were one of the worst in the country, and started the whole scandal. The former local Conservative council leader was found guilty of fraud over his expenses claims. It was a complaint to Parliament by Duncan Borrowman which led to local MP Derek Conway being fined over the employment of his son Henry Conway. What the press say: Duncan Borrowman the champion against sleaze and corruption SKY NEWS Disgraced MP Derek Conway has been told to repay Parliament £3,757 after breaking the rules over staffing allowances. He has also been told to make an apology to the House of Commons after paying his son Henry over £30,000 for working as his research assistant., the Lib Dem member who submitted the complaint about Henry to the committee last year said the punishment was not enough. "Derek Conway has done more than any other individual, and that is saying something, to bring disrepute on MPs and all politicians," he said. "There should be a mechanism for removing from office MPs who treat taxpayers with the contempt that Mr Conway has, just lining the pockets of his family." BBC News Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said the decision not to prosecute Mr Conway showed there was a need to overhaul Parliamentary allowances. "The public have the right to expect that their money is being properly accounted for. "The Speaker's review of expenses must provide the basis for fundamental changes to the system of MPs' allowances." The Met started an investigation after receiving a letter from , who is the prospective Lib Dem candidate for Mr Conway's Old Bexley and Sidcup seat. Daily Mail Duncan Borrowman said the issue was "important enough, especially in the present climate, to warrant police investigation".
